Live Bait Theatre will be offering a workshop for beginning and intermediate theatre directors on Saturday, March 2 from 9 am to 4 pm at the Motyer-Fancy Theatre. The workshop is sponsored by the Mount Allison Drama Program and it will be led by Live Bait Theatre’s Artistic Director Ron Kelly Spurles. A similar workshop was held in 2018 at the Saint John Theatre Company, and participant response was very positive, one participant stating, “The workshop was informative, creative and fun, thanks so much Ron!”
This one-day workshop will cover basic principles of directing, including: analyzing and breaking down your script; scheduling; general organization; working with actors and working with action verbs; working with designers and other members of the team; style and period analysis; making choices; communication; and dealing with issues and different types of people, including people who are challenging. Participants will also get hands on experience directing short scenes. No directing experience is necessary, but experience in some aspect of theatre would be helpful.
Ron Kelly Spurles is Director of Drama for the St Andrews Arts Council and Artistic Director of Live Bait Theatre, one of two professional theatre English language companies in New Brunswick. Ron holds a BFA in Drama in Education as well as an MFA in Theatre Directing from Illinois State University. He has directed more than forty productions including for Montreal’s Imago Theatre, Halifax’s Eastern Front Theatre, and the Illinois Shakespeare Festival. Ron received a directing award from the Kennedy Centre for the Arts in Washington D.C., and was the Crake fellow in Drama at Mount Allison University.
The cost of the workshop is $20 for Mount Allison and TRHS students, and $40 for the public. To register, or for more information, contact Live Bait Theatre at 536-2248 or firstname.lastname@example.org
